Parabens: Evil Incarnate?
thebeautybrains.com » The perils of parabens

Did you know that one small, scientific study that had inconclusive evidence is enough to set off a hysterical wave of panic throughout the world? No? Then let me know if you feel good about using parabens.

Chances are that you don't. Why? Because there has been so much talk about one small study that found parabens in breast cancer tumors which in turn set of a media blitz about parabens causing cancer. Of course, the scientists who conducted the study couldn't figure out why they were there but that was enough for the media, all green/natural groups, and manufactuers.

Personally, unless you have a documented allergy to parabens, they are the safest preservative on the market. Trust me, you do NOT want bacteria, yeast or mold growing in your cosmetics. Those nasties can kill you, and not in a pleasant way either.

I really like thebeautybrains blog...questions answered about cosmetic science. Check out their post on Perils of Parabens.

thebeautybrains.com » Can You Tell If Your Cosmetics Are Really Natural Or Not?

A great blog post on the myth that "natural" is always good for you. It's not you know...sulfuric acid, poison ivy, petroleum are all natural but you wouldn't put them in or on your body! The best combination, at least to me, is one of natural and synthetic (particularly for preservation).

Take a look at the post and decide for yourself!

Easy Lotion Recipe
Well, this week I've been making lotions by the bucketful! And getting frustrated. Each batch separated, no matter how much I tweaked my emulsifying wax (e-wax) amounts. I finally realized that it was my e-wax, not my recipes, that was the problem. So, I'm waiting for a new type of emulsifying wax (Polawax) to come in. So, after taking a day off, I went back and tried a different type of lotion recipe. This one uses beeswax and borax as the emulsifying system. Good news! It works!

MP Soap is an Addiction
I recently ordered a Melt and Pour Soap sampler from Brambleberry. Geez, what did I get myself into? So many choices! And it's easy too. Just melt the soap base and pour into a mold. Let cool down, pop out of mold and use. And trust me, anything can be a mold! I'm even saving the plastic cartons my baby's food comes in to make soap.

Citrus Mask for Oily or Blemished Skin
Oily skin can happen at any time during your lifetime. Teenagers suffer through it because of hormone changes. As an adult, overactive oil glands may be the culprit. Whatever your age, you can control oily skin by following a daily routine of skin maintenance.

Banana Mask for Dry Skin
Dry skin can happen to anyone, regardless of the type skin you have. Wintertime, though, seems to make problems worse for already dry or mature skin. The temperature changes and the dry air can really suck the moisture out of your skin.

The Ants Must Die! UPDATE
Ants have invaded my kitchen. Whether its the abundant food in my home, the water, or the warmth that is attracting them, I don't know. All I do know is that they ended up in my coffee pot, even though it was full of hot Verona coffee. I knew then that their time on this earth was limited. Not only because hot coffee apparently kills ants on contact, but to stop the invasion before it gets out of control!

Apple Mask For Normal Skin
One of my favorite times of the week is "mask day". I sit down after the kids are in bed and steam my face either in a warm shower or over a bowl of hot water. I have to say, though, that a warm shower is my preference! I then slather on a homemade mask and let the magic begin.
